Hawk Scholars Academy is a group of selected students who participate in extensive dual credit coursework beginning their freshman year of high school with the goal of completing the 42-semester credit hour core curriculum as established by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board for all undergraduate students in Texas public higher education institutions. Hawk Scholars Academy graduates will be recognized at graduation.
Unique to the Hawk Scholars Academy is the fact that students continue to be a part of the main ROHS campus while having the same opportunities for extracurricular activities and experiences as their classmates.
Finances
This program does carry college tuition costs, including textbooks and fees.
On average, a 3-hour course through Navarro College costs $250.Application
Hawk Scholars Academy is a group of students who participate in extensive dual credit coursework beginning their freshman year of high school with the goal being to complete the 42-semester credit hour core curriculum (as established by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board) for all undergraduate students in Texas public higher education institutions. Students may also complete 18 additional hours of college credit to earn an Associate’s Degree through Navarro College. Hawk Scholar Academy graduates will be recognized at graduation. Requirements to enter the Hawk Scholars Academy:
- Students must submit a completed Hawk Scholars Academy Applicant Information and Acknowledgments page.
- Passing scores on TSIA2 (see below)
- Students must complete the ApplyTexas application and provide acknowledgment of this by providing his/her ApplyTexas ID number on the Applicant Information and Acknowledgments page.
Please submit the aforementioned documents to the 8th Grade Counselor at Red Oak Middle School.
Application Procedures
- Please read the acknowledgments requiring your initials very carefully.
- TSI Test - Cost is $30.00 ($10 per test per subject area)
- Test dates will be available at ROMS and ROHS, additional testing options may be available on a Navarro campus. Walk-in testing is not available.
- Students typically take 3-8 hours, depending upon individual testing pace. Lunch is not provided for Saturday test sessions or at college testing sites,
- Students must meet college entrance testing criteria to enroll in dual credit courses. On-site TSIA 2.0 testing at ROMS/ ROHS is available and can be scheduled through the counseling office.
- College-ready TSIA 2.0 scores for Math and ELAR:
- ELAR (Reading and Writing) - College Ready Classification (CRC) 945 and Essay 5 OR College Ready Classification (CRC) less than 945 and Diagnostic Level of a 5 or 6 and at least a 5 Essay
- Math - College Ready Classification (CRC) 950 OR below 950 and Diagnostic Level 6
- College-ready TSIA 2.0 scores for Math and ELAR:
- Students must be enrolled at ROHS and accepted by Navarro before beginning dual credit coursework.
- Note the financial obligations for tuition and books.
- All forms are early spring to the ROMS Counseling Department. Deadline will be posted.
