It is with a heavy heart we share the passing of Dr. Joy Cockerham Shaw, a longtime ROISD employee, and Board Member. Services are pending and we will share arrangements once available.

Red Oak ISD School Board Member Dr. Joy Shaw was first elected to the school board in 2010. Dr. Shaw was born and raised in Red Oak, graduating in 1956 from Red Oak High School. She attended Texas Wesleyan for a year before marrying and starting a family. She later went back to college to earn a teaching degree upon the urging of Superintendent Donald T. Shields. While continuing to care for her family, Dr. Shaw’s educational journey led to a Master’s Degree in Education, a Master’s Degree in Special Education, and a Doctorate in Educational Leadership.

Dr. Shaw first began working in Red Oak ISD in 1973 and her career spanned 35 years. Roles and duties included: bus driver, custodian, history teacher, HS volleyball coach, 5th-grade teacher, elementary principal, and director of special education.

Dr. Shaw and her husband Nick had four children (Deborah, Pamela, Rhonda, and Scott) who each graduated from Red Oak High School.

Please keep the family in your prayers.
