Red Oak ISD School Board names a lone finalist for superintendent
On Monday, September 30, the Red Oak ISD School Board selected Brenda Sanford as the lone finalist for the position of superintendent for Red Oak ISD. She is currently the Director of Curriculum and Assessment for Canton ISD.
Sanford has been at Canton ISD since 2001 after earning her Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Texas at Tyler. A graduate of Canton High School in 1985, she returned to her home town district after serving as Justice of the Peace for the City of Canton. She taught for ten years before becoming a campus administrator while earning her Master’s Degree in Education from Lamar University in 2009. She has been in the curriculum department since 2014.
She holds a number of certifications, including Elementary English, English as a Second Language, Mathematics, Early Childhood, Principal and Superintendent. She has also attended TASBO’s (Texas Association of School Business Officials) Accounting – Budget and Financial Planning, Construction Academy, and Management 306.
“I recognize the importance of equipping each student and staff member with the skills and strategies necessary to help them reach their full, individual potential,” stated Mrs. Sanford. “We must take this responsibility to heart at every level in order to give our students what they deserve.”
Canton ISD received an ‘A’ rating from the Texas Education Agency with a score of 90. They earned a 91 in Student Achievement, 85 in School Progress and an 87 in Closing the Gaps. Canton ISD has four campuses with 2,174 students served by 249 employees. They earned a FIRST rating of 98 for financial integrity.
The search for a new superintendent started in July following the departure of Dr. Michael Goddard. The Board hired Dr. Ann Dixon as the interim superintendent and Walsh Gallegos as the search firm to find a new permanent superintendent.
The application period closed September 3 and candidates were screened and vetted by the search firm who then presented all applicants to the Board for review. The Board then screened the candidates and arranged for first round interviews followed by second round interviews.
The Board is expected to officially hire Mrs. Sanford on Monday, October 21, after the mandatory 21-day waiting period.
