Dr. Joy Shaw Middle School Grand Opening is a huge success!

On a beautiful Sunday afternoon, November 16, Red Oak ISD hosted a heartfelt grand opening and dedication ceremony for the new Dr. Joy Shaw Middle School, located at 340 Westmoreland Rd. in Ovilla. The event welcomed between 600–700 guests, including ROISD School Board members, community leaders, and family members of Dr. Joy Shaw, to honor the legacy of a beloved educator and public servant.

“November 16 was a great day for Red Oak ISD and the communities we serve,” said Superintendent Brenda Sanford. “This school honors the legacy of a woman who dedicated her life to education as a teacher, coach, administrator, and board member. We dedicate it to her compassion and know our students will rise to her expectations of excellence!”

The day began with a VIP reception for Dr. Shaw’s family, ROISD leadership, city mayors, and representatives from architectural firm Corgan and construction company Joeris. VIP guests participated in a ribbon-cutting ceremony, followed by guided tours of the new campus.

Guests arriving for the 2:30 p.m. public grand opening were warmly welcomed by the Shaw Middle School Cheerleaders. At 2:45 p.m., a ceremony was held in the cafeteria, featuring remarks from Superintendent Sanford, Board President Melanie Petersen, Principal Lanoria Washington, and Rhonda Shaw, representing the Shaw family. The ROISD School Board unveiled a portrait of Dr. Shaw, which will be permanently displayed in the school. The event concluded with a performance by the Shaw Middle School Band, followed by self-guided tours.

The new facility, made possible by the May 2023 bond, is a state-of-the-art campus designed with a central hallway layout. It includes academic wings for grades 6–8 which each have an interior courtyard, and communal spaces such as a cafeteria, library, fine arts, and athletics areas. Construction is 98% complete, with final touches underway. Staff will move in over winter break, and students will begin attending on January 7, 2026.

“We are also ecstatic to announce the project is approximately $10 million under budget, which means those bonds will not be sold, saving taxpayers money,” added Sanford.

The dedication of Dr. Joy Shaw Middle School marks a proud moment for Red Oak ISD and a lasting tribute to a woman whose life and work continue to inspire generations.
