Miss Marissa Racquel Kerlin

My name is Marissa "Racquel" Kerlin, and I will be teaching 5th Grade English Language Arts and Social Studies this year!

I subbed in the district for 5 months in all the elementary and middle schools and I loved getting to meet a lot of the kiddos. I am super excited to call Wooden Elementary home!

I graduated from the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor in May of 2017. I went straight to getting my master's degree in Curriculum & Instruction at Southwestern Assemblies of God University in Waxahachie. I also played collegiate sports on scholarship for the SAGU women's soccer team for 2017-2018 season. My team made it all the way to the semi-finals of the NCCAA National Conference Tournament in Florida! It was a historic season, we set many school records!

Although my plan was to finish my Master's degree and play one more year of college ball before starting my career in education, I got two unexpected diagnosis: Rheumatoid Arthritis and Sjorgens's Syndrome, two autoimmune diseases. Due to the nature of these diseases, I decided to end my collegiate soccer career to focus on getting healthy and finding a medication that works best for me. I have begun treatment and I feel so much better, praise God!

I was completely heartbroken that I had to stop playing soccer after 18 years, but doors began to open and I ended up applying for a position in Red Oak ISD. I know without a doubt, Wooden is exactly where God wants me to be. I have a big heart for kids, making learning fun and I am ready to meet my kiddos :)  I am counting down the days until the first day of school, I can't wait to begin this journey!

With love,

Miss Kerlin
