Red Oak ISD Athletics is dedicated to the health and safety of every student-athlete, coach and fans. The following Return2Play plans outline the safety measures that will take place as well as timelines for students to return. Please direct any questions to your head coach or the district athletic director.
ROISD will follow the guidance issued by the State of Texas regarding indoor and outdoor gatherings and the UIL guidelines for timelines.

All cheerleaders will begin the season on August 10-12 at UCA Summer Camp.
Student athletes that chose virtual learning will be required to attend all practices designated during the summer on August 17-19.
After school practice and cheer class is mandatory for all athletes (face to face and virtual learners).
All cheerleaders must complete the required athletic physical requirements/paperwork in order to participate.
Any student athlete that is COVID symptomatic or has a lab-confirmed COVID positive test must not report and cannot return the TEA/UIL conditions have been met.
Individuals Confirmed or Suspected with COVID-19
Any individuals who themselves either: (a) are lab-confirmed to have COVID-19; or (b) experience the symptoms of COVID-19 must stay at home throughout the infection period, and cannot return to campus until the school system screens the individual to determine any of the below conditions for campus re-entry have been met:
- In the case of an individual who was diagnosed with COVID-19, the individual may return to school when all three of the following criteria are met:
- at least one day (24 hours) have passed since recovery (resolution of fever without the use of fever-reducing medications);
- the individual has improvement in symptoms (e.g., cough, shortness of breath); and
- at least ten days have passed since symptoms first appeared.
- In the case of an individual who has symptoms that could be COVID-19 and who is not evaluated by a medical professional or tested for COVID-19, such individual is assumed to have COVID-19, and the individual may not return to the campus until the individual has completed the same three-step set of criteria listed above.
- If the individual has symptoms that could be COVID-19 and wants to return to school before completing the above stay at home period, the individual must either (a) obtain a medical professional’s note clearing the individual for return based on an alternative diagnosis or (b) receive two separate negative confirmations at least 24 hours apart.
- In the case of an individual who was diagnosed with COVID-19, the individual may return to school when all three of the following criteria are met:

All high school cross country runners will begin cross country practices on Monday, August 10.
Practices will be in the mornings from 6:30 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. We will meet for each practice outside of the ROHS Fieldhouse.
Student athletes that chose virtual learning will be required to attend workouts to participate on an athletic team.
Before school practice and team tryouts will begin for cross country on Monday, August 10. Coaches will provide additional information to the student athletes regarding practice and tryout times prior to August 10.
All high school student athletes must complete the required athletic physical requirements/paperwork in order to participate on an athletic team.
Tentative high school meet schedule:
- 1st Cross Country meet scheduled for the week of September 14th.
- District 14-5A Cross Country meet is scheduled for Wednesday, November 11, 2020.
Any student athlete that is COVID symptomatic or has a lab confirmed COVID positive test must not report and cannot return until the following TEA/UIL conditions have been met.

All football athletes, grades 9-12, will resume strength and conditioning and skill activities beginning August 10 and will resume through September 4. The first day of football acclimation and practices will be September 8.
All football athletes, grades 9-12, will begin in class participation on August 20 when school begins. Athletic periods for all 10th-12th grades will be 1st period and 9th grade will be 8th period each school day. Report times for each class will be communicated prior to the first day of school on August 20.
Student athletes that have chosen virtual learning will be required to attend all practices and athletic periods in order to participate on the football team.
All high school football athletes will be required to complete all Rank One athletic physical requirements/paperwork by August 20 in order to participate on the football team.
Tentative High School Football Game schedule:
- Scrimmage vs Waxahachie - September 18
- Game 1 vs Ennis - September 25

Tennis practice will start when school begins on August 20.
Student athletes that chose virtual learning will be required to attend afterschool practice until 5:00 p.m. If the player is enrolled in 8th period, he/she will be required to attend at the beginning of 8th period until 5:00 p.m. to compete on the tennis team. If the player is enrolled in 1st period, he/she will be required to attend after school practice from 4:00-5:00 p.m. to participate on the tennis team.
All school student athletes must complete the required athletic physical requirements/paperwork in order to participate on an athletic team.

All high school volleyball players will begin strength and conditioning and skills workouts on August 10, 2020.
These workouts will be broken into two sections: 10th-12th graders will be from 7:00 a.m. until 10:00 a.m. and then the 9th graders will be from 5:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. One hour of strength and conditioning and two hours of skill work.
These workouts will continue through August 19, the day before school officially starts.
Once school starts on August 20, student athletes that chose virtual learning will be required to attend all practices; this includes all before and after school practices as well as practice during the athletic periods.
Once school begins, practices will be as follows:
- Freshman will practice from 6:30 a.m. until 7:45 a.m. and then again during the athletic period (5th period) from 12:02 p.m. until 12:50 p.m.
- Sophomores to Seniors will practice during 1st period from 8:15 a.m. until 9:12 a.m. and they will return for practice from 4:30 p.m. until 5:30 p.m. each day.
- These practice times will be in effect until Monday, September 7, the first official day of the season.
Yes, we will practice on Labor Day, Monday, September 7, 2020.
- Your coach will give you a practice time for Labor Day.
Beginning September 8, the following practice schedule will be followed.
- Freshman will practice from 6:00 a.m. until 7:45 a.m. each day of the week. Then again, during 5th period, which is from 12:02 p.m. until 12:50 p.m. On Monday and Wednesday, they will lift weights during the 5th period class.
- Sophomores to Seniors will practice during 1st period, which is from 8:20 a.m. until 9:12 a.m., followed by practice from 4:30 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. On Monday and Wednesday mornings, they will lift weights from 7:00 a.m. until 7:45 a.m.
The first scrimmage of the year is scheduled for September 11 and the first match is scheduled for September 15. Due to the changes set forth by UIL, the teams will be playing 3 nights a week with two matches scheduled for each night, up until the start of district play. This is different from in years past, the first two weeks we will be playing Tuesday, Friday and Saturday. There will be no tournaments this season.
All high school volleyball players must complete the required athletic physical requirements/paperwork in order to participate on a team. If you are new to Red Oak High School, you must have a completed physical. If you played sports at ROHS last year and had a physical that will cover your physical for this upcoming season; you do however have to complete the first page of the physical form, which is the medical history and this can be done online with your other required athletic paperwork. Please have everything completed before August 10.
All high school volleyball players must turn in a completed drug testing form to Coach Porter no later than Monday, August 10. No payment is required, just the signed form.
Any student athlete that is COVID symptomatic or has a lab confirmed COVID positive test must not report and cannot return until the following TEA/UIL conditions have been met.

Football, Volleyball, and Cross Country
All middle school student athletes will begin strength and conditioning activities (offseason) when school begins on August 20. Strength and conditioning will occur during the 7th and 8th athletic periods (during the school day).
Student athletes that chose virtual learning will be required to attend the strength and conditioning workouts to participate on an athletic team.
Before/After school practice and team tryouts will begin for football, volleyball, and cross country on Tuesday, September 8, 2020. Coaches will provide additional information to the student athletes regarding practice and tryout times prior to September 8.
All middle school student athletes must complete the required athletic physical requirements/paperwork in order to participate on an athletic team.
Tentative Middle School game schedule:
- 1st Volleyball Game scheduled for September 17
- 1st Football Game scheduled for September 28/29
- 1st Cross Country Meet scheduled for the week of September 28

Is my child expected to attend athletic practices during virtual learning?
Yes, attendance is mandatory at all practices (during the athletic period and before/after school) in order to participate in ROISD Athletics.
Who is responsible for transporting my child to/from practice?
It is the athlete’s responsibility to find their own transportation to and from all athletic practices.
Will student-athletes be screened for COVID?
Yes, every athlete will be expected to self-screen for COVID symptoms and temperatures will be checked daily.
What will happen if a student-athlete tests positive for COVID?
A student-athlete testing positive for COVID will be removed, all parents of student-athletes that could be impacted will be contacted, and all areas will be disinfected that were used by the student-athlete.
Are masks required?
Yes, every student is required to wear a mask at all times, except when actively exercising or socially distanced.
What measures will be in place to disinfect equipment?
All equipment will be properly disinfected after all workouts and practices.
Will coaches/athletic trainers wear masks?
Yes, all persons not actively exercising or socially distanced are required to wear a mask.
How long does my student have to sit out if they test positive for COVID?
- At least one day (24 hours) has passed since recovery (resolution of fever without the use of fever-reducing medications).
- The individual has improvement in symptoms (e.g., cough, shortness of breath).
- At least ten days have passed since symptoms first appeared.
How will locker rooms and dressing areas be handled with student-athletes?
Student-athletes will be rotated in groups through the locker room areas and masks will be required at all times when in close proximity to other student-athletes. Locker room and dressing areas will be disinfected after each use.
Will drinking water be available at practices?
Student-athletes will need to bring their own water bottles to and from practice. ROISD will have a limited number of bottles available for use if needed. Bottles cannot be shared.
Is my student-athlete required to have a physical and all RANK ONE forms completed in order to participate in practices?
Yes, all athletes must be fully compliant with electronic forms and a completed physical. At ROHS, all student-athletes must also complete a drug testing form.
If my student-athlete misses practice due to COVID will there be repercussions?
No, but students-athletes will be required to make up practice time missed before participating in an athletic event.
Will athletic trainers be available to see student-athletes before or after school?
Yes, athletic trainers will be available to help student athletes. Please email or call the athletic trainers to make an appointment if needed. Masks will be required in the athletic training room.
Our coach has our student-athletes working out after school – Is this within UIL guidelines?
A UIL rule change for the 2020-2021 school year only allows students to participate in a maximum of 60 minutes per day of strength and conditioning activities outside the school day.
Will junior varsity, freshman, and middle school teams compete this school year?
As of today, ROISD is planning to compete at all levels. Updated schedules for junior varsity, freshman, and middle school teams will be coming soon.
Will the parents of student-athletes be able to attend games at ROISD facilities?
Yes, ROISD is planning to allow parents/fans to attend athletic events. ROISD will follow the guidance issued by the State of Texas regarding indoor and outdoor gatherings.
Will “No Pass No Play” be in effect for the 2020-2021 school year?
Yes, all student-athletes (virtual or face to face) will be subject to academic eligibility guidelines set forth in the “No Pass No Play” rules.
Will buses be used to transport student-athletes to and from games?
Transportation to and from games will be provided by school bus. Student-athletes will be required to wear a mask and social distance (as much as possible) while on the bus to and from games.
